David Gerstein

Gerstein 03

He was born in Jerusalem in 1964 and studied at the Bezalel Academy before going to Paris (Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts- then to New York where he was part of the Art Student League, a rather limited group and came back in Europe to enter the famous St Martin’s School in London and finally was back to Jerusalem and started teaching. Since then he sis not stop exhibiting around the world.

He is a skilful drawer and is able to transform human silhouettes without deforming totally the main lines. He is a painter but mainly a sculptor and is totally involved in the environmental art which was the subject of the day some years ago in Brussels. His message is to express the daily life and present his sculptures in public places to describe or explain the situation anybody is living. That is the reason why his creations are so popular.

Working on metal support (steel sheets or aluminium) he just expresses the right moment people is living and mainly the joyful ones. He represents fruits and flowers, young people walking, sport training or children playing in a happy atmosphere. Hand painted in bright colours, each subject is on one or two layers, and his works are hand painted and never industrially enamelled because the various works never do belong to a series but are in limited number.

Influenced by the various currents of art expression during the last century, David Gerstein presents a warm full creation and he does not forget the bit of humour we all need to survive in this world. His exhibition is a song, a hymn to life and makes me think about the group I met in Antwerp some years ago called the David’s lyre.

As regards the famous barrier between art and craft one can always discuss the matter but in the meantime, you have to see this exhibition at the Sablon.
