Wood or stone, no matter any material is welcome in the atelier of Michel Smolders.
The sculptor like well defined silhouettes and, if you remember, his bushmen were statues defined as many-sided human bodies still ones that looked like in move.

He comes back now wih stone blocks in which the subject seems to be condensed.

The lines cut into the stone seem to be some mathematic formula’s and you can read + or – but also a H and a N.The artist (born 1929) was trained in the atelier of Oscar Jespers at La Cambre but strongly develop his line along the years and still comes back to the human body structure he likes.

A woman portrait called quietude (and is is really quiet) is face to face with a child that seems to have run a lot and tries to rest a bit.

No details in these statues but cut off sections and a final figuration close to abstract art, something figurative in a Spartan mode.
When he carved wall pieces, the sculptor also remained far from too many details.

Michel Smolders is in life like he is in his creations but never forget he was the initiator and he leaded many symposiums about sculpture in Les Avins-en-Condroz (B) and worked in Mexico as well a in Liège or Brussels but to inform the visitor, he shows a very simplified CV, just the necessary lines of explanation, something resulting from a personal option : no noise but just works to look at !
Do not miss him.
